ZDF Enterprises to distribute modern version of classic children’s series Pan Tau

ZDF Enterprises - February 2020

ZDF Enterprises has secured global distribution rights (ex Germany and Czech Free-TV) for Caligari Film’s reinvention of the magical and much loved children’s classic Pan Tau (14 x 26’, 7 x 50’).

Family entertainment at its best, Pan Tau was filmed in English with a predominantly British cast. The star of the show is Britain’s Got Talent finalist, magician and comedian, Matt Edwards. Other actors include Hannah Chinn (Two’s Company, There’s Always Hope) and Jacob Avery (Dark Heart, Adult Material).

Creator and Executive Producer, Gabriele M. Walther produced the series for Germany’s WDR where it became an instant success with up to 15.5 % market share attracting viewers young and old.

Pan Tau celebrates its 50th anniversary having first appeared on TV screens in 1970. The series went on to develop a cult following as fans of all ages embraced the lovable character. Described as Charlie Chaplin meets Mary Poppins, the elegant, silent and fun hero uses his magic powers to help the children of Westpark School solve their problems whether in the schoolyard or at home with their families.

Peter Lang, Vice President ZDFE.junior, said: “I am delighted that we are partnering again with Gabriele, who has the magic touch when it comes to creating children’s content. The longstanding relationship has enriched our catalogue with successful titles like Coconut, The Little Dragon and The Muscleteers and we are proud to be able to offer this new enchanting series, Pan Tau, to our global clients.”

Gabriele M. Walther said: “Reinventing Pan Tau for today’s young viewers as well as taking the fan base of the original series on a magical journey was our goal. The stories are newly developed with contemporary themes but the essence of the character remains the same. He knows no rules so always has a different perspective and wants to make the world a better place.”

Interviewed in The Times newspaper about his role, Matt Edwards commented, “It took me back. It makes you feel something you haven’t felt since you were a child: don’t worry about life right now, things will be all right.”

No matter what the problem is, Pan Tau is there to help with a smile and his incredible magic. He can make bathtubs fly or beam you into your favourite novel or a history painting. His plans to solve the issue aren’t always straightforward and are often hilarious, but he gets there in the end. He is truly the invisible friend that everyone wants. A dapper gent, Pan Tau always carries an umbrella and dons a bowler hat. But this is no ordinary hat as it has magical powers.
