EM.Entertainment joins US video-on-demand service Kabillion

EM.TV - February 2007

  • Joint venture with Taffy Entertainment and REMIX Entertainment in the children’s and youth entertainment sector
  • Access to key emerging business sector and world’s largest market

Access to the emerging US video-on-demand (VOD) market:
EM.Entertainment GmbH, a subsidiary of EM.TV AG, has joined as a shareholder with 22.5 percent in the new American video-on-demand platform Kabillion via an intermediate holding. Other shareholders of the start-up Kabillion include Taffy Entertainment, a subsidiary of France’s MoonScoop Group, and REMIX Entertainment.

Broad-reaching platform for the younger generation: Kabillion is targeted at and appeals to children and young people, ages five to twelve. Launched in January 2007 the free television VOD service is available via Comcast’s digital cable Select On Demand package in the US, as well as online at www.kabillion.com. Comcast is the leading provider of cable, entertainment and communications products and services in the United States.

Entertainment of the highest quality: Kabillion offers exciting Emmy Award-caliber formats from the Taffy Entertainment library such as animated kids’ comedy-adventure series Bobby’s World, 3D animated comedy hit Pet Alien, as well as the trading cards and Animé-themed adventure series Mix Master: King of Cards. The platform also presents high quality new productions from the EM.Entertainment catalogue such as action comedy series Staines Down Drains and innovative programs from the company’s rights library including The World of Tosh. This venture also anticipates creating new co-productions between EM.Entertainment and Taffy Entertainment.

Launched with the clear objective to establish the service as one of the leading free-VOD providers for children and young people in the US, Kabillion also plans to offer branded mobile and gaming versions of the platform. Advertiser supported, the interactive multi-platform will offer kids marketers a new way to get its message to an audience whose media habits are ever changing.

For EM.Entertainment, the shareholding in Kabillion represents an important strategic step towards establishing itself within the American market, as well as accelerating its involvement in the emerging VOD business. The significant growth potential demonstrated by this sector is leading the company to gain importance alongside classic exploitation within free-TV and pay-TV. EM.Entertainment’s stake in Kabillion will provide the company its first opportunity to present an American audience with children’s and youth programs from its own rights library, thus enabling it to establish a profile in the US as a producer of high quality programming.

"With our shareholding in Kabillion, EM.Entertainment has achieved two important milestones," comments Susanne Schosser, Managing Director of EM.Entertainment GmbH. "On the one hand we are expanding our activities in the video-on-demand sector, whilst on the other, we are also opening up the world’s largest media market for our children’s and youth programs. The capabilities of all partners form a strong basis and it is our shared objective to establish Kabillion as one of the leading free-VOD providers for children and young people in the US."
