Brand Licensing & Merchandising at the Frankfurt Book Fair

Frankfurt Book Fair - September 2013

An extensive programme on the Friday of the fair in the Kids Bubble and in Hall 3.0

This year, for the second time, the Friday of the Frankfurt Book Fair (9-13 October 2013) will be devoted to the theme of licensing. On 11 October, between 11.00 am and 3.00 pm, the programme includes a presentation followed by a panel discussion, a soup-reception and a tour of the fair which takes in a number of recognised licensing experts. This year’s focus is on licensing in the field of children’s and young adult media.

This is an area in which the licensing of established, successful brands has become a solid source of income for many publishers. In the other direction, many profitable licensed themes, such as the currently popular Hunger Games trilogy, or The Little Prince, originated from the book industry. The Frankfurt Book Fair, with its high-profile children’s and young adult books area, is an ideal place to scout for characters with licensing potential.

In the event “Trend check: the licensing market for children’s and young adult topics”, Axel Dammler, Managing Director of Iconkids & Youth, will present the latest figures on the licensing business in the children’s segment, and will discuss future business strategies with, among others, Jan Weitendorf, Managing Director of the Oetinger publishing group, and Friso de Jong, head of programme utilisation at WDR mediagroup. At the soup-reception that follows, participants in the Licensing Day will have an opportunity to network. The tour of the fair on the licensing theme will take in a number of exhibitors in the field of children’s media, including Blue Ocean and Ars Edition, and participants will be able to talk to licensing experts from his companies.

For the first time, the Licensing Day will be held in the roughly 120 sq m Kids Bubble, the new hub for children’s topics on the Agora. This offers a stage, showcases for licensing products, and exhibition areas that are being used by Panini, Hasbro, Knete.de, Oetinger, Egmont and others. On the trade visitor days, the new Kids Bubble is a central meeting point for professional events, networking and trend scouting in the field of children’s media. At the weekend, the programme will consist of events for children and young adults, hosted by the exhibiting publishers.

Tickets for the Licensing Day cost 149 euros, plus VAT. They can be purchased from www.book-fair.com/licensing, or from the ticket desk at the Kids Bubble on the day itself.
