“Aquileia” – competition in the ancient world
Strategically planned gladiator fights

Zoch-Verlag - December 2011

A new game in typical Zoch design is "Aquileia" from Zoch. But somehow the game is totally different from all the other games in the portfolio of the Munich-based company: It’s far more than a family game. Frequent players will enjoy the game while the occasional player will also take pleasure in “Aquileia”.

Fighting and acting for fame and glory: “Aquileia”, one of the most important trading town of the ancient world, is a gathering place for famous gladiators. Here they fight their combats, compete in chariot races, and accumulate their wealth through profitable handicraft enterprises. Later, players use their newly acquired wealth to buy estates and build stately mansions. Occasional players will enjoy the game, as rules are easy to learn. Professional players will soon start looking out for slaves and money – that’s what the “Hör Zu” magazine claimed in their Christmas review.

The game applies the “worker placement” mechanic. According to this concept, players decide at the beginning of each round, which activities they want to engage in: the market, the arena, the stadium, or the commercial quarter. Here players challenge each other in exciting duels of dice, hold nail-biting auctions, and execute strategic manoeuvres, while luck and tactics subtly tend to balance each other out. For about 90 minutes players delve into a fine ancient world – however, frequent players know, that, thanks to all these ingenious mechanics, one game or the other might last an hour longer.

"Aquileia" is a lavishly equipped game designed by the Italian CIELO D’ORO team and a perfect combination of strategy and luck.
