A picture book on bullying in play schools

Coppenrath - February 2019

Their own child being bullied in play school is an absolute nightmare for parents. Even worse, when they find out that their child doesn’t dare to confide in anyone and suffers silently. Just like Tommi, the main character of the picture book "Du gehörst nicht dazu!" (You do not belong!) by Antje Szillat and Marion Goedelt.

Johannes bullies Tommi in child school. He calls him “oaf” and “coward” and has even thrown his sandwich in the bin the other day. All the other children have found that funny and laughed out loud. Tommi doesn’t want to get up in the mornings and has tummy ache when it’s time to leave for play school. In the end, things get so bad that he can no longer choke back his tears and finally confides in his teacher.

In addition to bullying in play school, Coppenrath has released other books on extraordinary topics. “Ein Himmel für Oma” (Heaven for Grandma) deals with the death of loved ones, “Wir sind immer für dich da” (We will always be there for you) tells about parents getting divorced, and “Als Mama nur noch traurig war” (When Mum was always sad) tackles the difficult problem of depressions. These books help children to deal with difficult topics in child-appropriate ways and make them understand that they are not alone with these problems. Each story comes with an afterword written by expert educators that analyse and explain the problems and offer practical advice.
