The Most Coveted Toys in 2018

Bundesverband des Spielwaren-Einzelhandels e.V. - December 2018

Interactive baby dolls, finger monkeys and snatching robot chameleons

As always the German Toy Trade Association (BVS) presents the TOP 10 Toys of the Year one month before Christmas. What to children in Germany love most? “Horses and toy trains fuel children’s imagination. An interactive doll learns how to talk and a robot chameleon snatches food from kid’s fingers. Whether it’s an interactive finger monkey or talking bricks – also in 2018 the toy industry makes children’s eyes shine with joy,” said Steffen Kahnt, Director, BVS.

Horses and Toy Trains:
The classic toys for kids are horses and toy trains. And while in the “Horse Club” world by Schleich the Lakeside Riding Stable with House and Stable is the new starting pointing for the latest adventures of the four friends, Playmobil provides a new interpretation of the horse theme, based upon the famous DreamWorks animation series “Spirit – Riding Free”. In the long-selling category toy trains Märklin ties in with the hit Jim Knopf movie by launching their own Emma locomotive. And the LEGO Group relies on their push&go motor and functional bricks for their LEGO DUPLO Freight Train.

Interaction engages:
Thanks to inbuilt sensors the baby doll Luvabella is more realistic than any doll before. She is even able to learn how to talk. Little finger monkeys “listen” when you speak to them. And the talking BlaBlaBlocks by VTech provide an interactive building experience.

Loads of action on your sandbox construction site provides the realistic Volvo Dumper with giant tipping trough. The hilarious Robot Chameleon snatches food by remote-control. And the Nerf brand, known for their toy blasters, caters for ultimate laser battle action with their new Laser Ops Pro line. Instead of soft darts they come with infrared beams and offer a live videogame experience.

BVS Director Kahnt:
“Dolls, trains, and horses have always been real stars for children. No matter if digital or analogue – toys have never been so versatile and engaging as they are today. Children interact, create fantasy worlds, and master challenges.”
