Superb designs inspired by 17th century engravings from RHS Lindley Library

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced the award of a licence to Stark & Greensmith, a leading designer and manufacturer of architectural fence products for commercial and domestic use, for a new laser-cut garden screen range boasting designs inspired by 17th century illustrations from the RHS Lindley Library.

Called the Parterre range, it is made up of four decorative panels. Available in both full-height (1.78m H x 1.19m W) and balustrade (0.93m H x 1.48m W) panels, and in two finishes – corten steel and a new, warm grey-hued powder-coated aluminium – the RHS-endorsed screens can be used as boundary fencing and on terraces or decking to create a dining or seating area. They can also act as solar shading in pergolas, for screening in the garden, or formally as garden dividers to create ‘rooms’.

A parterre is a level space in a garden occupied by an ornamental arrangement of flowerbeds, and engravings of knot gardens and parterres have been referenced in the new panel designs by Stark & Greensmith’s creative director, Martine Le Gassick. The engravings have been adapted from The English Gardner, a practical guide to gardening by Leonard Meager (c1624 - c1704), first published in London in 1688.

The garden screen range was launched on 18 June on a pre-order basis for delivery from August. It will be available at a wide range of retailers, from specialist nurseries to online garden retailers.

The panels have been designed to bridge the gap between the traditional and modern: the pattern design has a heraldic and historic feel, but the use of crisp and clean aluminium and the more industrial corten steel adds a modern edge. They are expected to be popular with homeowners wanting a ‘show garden’ look at home with both aesthetic and functional appeal.

To mark the collaboration, panels from the Parterre range have been installed in the outdoor café area at RHS Garden Wisley. Stark & Greensmith panels have also appeared in award-winning gardens at the RHS Chelsea, RHS Hampton Court Palace and RHS Harlow Carr Flower Shows and the RHS Malvern Spring Festival.

Martine Le Gassick, creative director, Stark & Greensmith, says: “We’re delighted to have collaborated with the RHS for this set of elegant screens which will enhance any garden, however big or small. The timelessness of these illustrations of knot gardens and parterres translates beautifully to modern screen formats, while their antiquity lends an unmistakeable sense of history and tradition.“

Shereen Llewellin, Licensing Executive, RHS, says: “These superb Stark & Greensmith designs brilliantly adapt 17th-century illustration to state-of-the art screens. These are the first high-end garden screens endorsed by the RHS and the result has been amazing, perfectly uniting style, quality and function.”
